The difference of aluminium 6061 vs 6082 is 6082 aluminum belongs to a new alloy composition similar to 6061, but with better performance. Aluminum 6082 is widely used in Europe due to its higher tensile strength, approximately 10-18 % higher than aluminum 6061. At the same time, it has better corrosion resistance due to the presence of copper, without sacrificing any extrusion performance and anodizing reaction. Although aluminum alloys 6082 and 6061 both belong to the 6xxx series aluminum alloys (silicon-magnesium alloys), they still have differences. The main difference lies in the different proportions of silicon and magnesium in 6082 and 6061 aluminium.

  1. Aluminum alloy 6061: Si is 0.4-0.8, Mg is 0.8-1.2, and Fe is 0.7.

The main alloying elements of 6061 aluminum alloy are magnesium and silicon, which form the Mg2Si phase. If a certain amount of manganese and chromium are added, the detrimental effects of iron can be neutralized. Sometimes, small amounts of copper or zinc are also added to increase the strength of the alloy without significantly reducing its corrosion resistance. A small amount of copper is also added to counteract the adverse effects of titanium and iron on conductivity. Zirconium or titanium can refine grain size and control recrystallization microstructure. Lead and bismuth can be added to improve machinability. Mg2Si is dissolved in aluminum, giving the alloy artificial aging hardening function. The main alloying elements in 6061 aluminum sheet alloy are magnesium and silicon, which have moderate strength, good corrosion resistance, weldability, and good oxidation effects.

aluminium 6061 vs 6082

  1. Aluminum alloy 6082 composition:

Silicon Si: 0.7-1.3; Iron Fe: 0.5; Copper Cu: 0.10; Manganese Mn: 0.4-1.0; Magnesium Mg: 0.6-1.2; Chromium Cr: 0.25; Zinc Zn: 0.20; Titanium Ti: 0.10; Aluminum AL: balance.

6082 aluminum sheet (composition) belongs to the 6xxx series (Al-Mg-Si) alloy aluminum sheet. It is a heat-treatable aluminum alloy sheet that has medium strength, good weldability, and corrosion resistance. It is mainly used in transportation and structural engineering industries, such as bridges, cranes, roof structures, transport planes, transport ships, etc. In recent years, with the rapid development of the shipbuilding industry at home and abroad, reducing ship weight, improving speed, and seeking alternative aluminum alloy materials to replace steel components have become important issues faced by the aluminum processing industry and the shipbuilding industry. 6082 aluminum alloy sheet has moderate strength, good corrosion resistance, and lightweight, making it an ideal material for manufacturing high-speed ship components.

Aluminium 6061 vs 6082 belong to aluminum-magnesium-silicon heat-treatable strengthening alloys, with good extrusion processing and forging performance, as well as good anodizing and corrosion resistance. After extrusion quenching and artificial aging, the hardness of aluminium 6082 is ≥80 HBS, while aluminium 6061 is ≥95. It is suitable for manufacturing aircraft landing pads, small boats, building components, bicycles, automotive parts, optical instruments, railway vehicles, and other aluminum materials. 6082 and 6061 aluminum have many similar uses, but customers in the Middle East prefer 6082 aluminum alloy.
